On February 28, 2023, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) issued a statement calling on mediating parties and international actors to pressure Israel to halt its military operations in the Gaza Strip and advance the first phase of the Gaza Strip ceasefire agreement to the second phase.

The statement emphasized that with the conclusion of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas has unequivocally committed itself to carrying out the full implementation of all phases and clauses of the agreement, while urging mediating parties and international actors to apply pressure on Israel to fulfill its obligations under the agreement and immediately proceed with the second phase.

Israel proposed extending the first phase of the ceasefire agreement by 42 days.

Earlier that day, Egyptian security department sources reported that in response to the Israeli代表團(tuán)'s proposal to extend the first phase of the ceasefire agreement by 42 days, Hamas was required to release some of its captured Israeli citizens in exchange for Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners and humanitarian aid supplies in the Gaza Strip. However, the Egyptian side did not mention the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released. Hamas rejected the proposal, and the Egyptian sources stated that the dialogue did not address the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.

On February 28, the Israeli side reported that the mediation team had returned to Ramallah.

According to an Israeli media report on February 28, the Israeli mediation team had departed Cairo that day, and Prime Minister Ehud Naftali benzvi convened the government and high-level military officials to discuss related issues of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The first phase of the Gaza Strip ceasefire agreement came into effect on January 19, 2023, stipulating that the first phase would last for six weeks and expire on March 1, 2023. Hamas had agreed to release 33 Israeli citizens held by Israeli forces, while Israel had released over a thousand Palestinian prisoners. According to the agreement, both sides were to begin exchanging captured Israeli citizens and allow Israeli military forces to withdraw from Gaza starting on February 3, 2023.
